A long time ago, when the Gods first created children in their image, the Wind dragons did not have wings. The God in charge of shaping the natives of the Zephyr land, the Windsinger, did not have them. As he was a God, he did not need them to reach the sky, and so he never gave them to his children.

The first dragons did not even notice the mistake. There were no other dragons, and the only God they had ever seen was without wings as well, and he was doing fine.

For you see, in the first years the Wind God did not tire of his children and stayed grounded to take care of them. They had never seen him fly, and why would they fly if their God didn’t?

Moons passed and the Wind dragons were happy. They tended to the reed, sang songs and started to tell tales to one another. Those times were perfect. Until the Stromcatcher challenged the Windsinger to a duel. And Gods did not decline invitations.

The Wind dragons were alarmed when their God suddenly lept into the skies with a mighty roar. And even more alarmed when he disappeared into the clouds above them and did not come back to earth. The first thunderstorm stirred above their heads and great flashes of lightning were followed by thunderous roars. The Wind dragons cowered and hid from the violence that pounded the earth and tried to sing their fear away. The storm passed after three nights, but left no trace of their beloved creator.

They wept long and hard for the loss of their God. Some tried to follow him into the sky, but they always came crashing back down. They despaired, whailed and prayed. Until one morning, a small hatchling figured out a way to make other things fly. Colored straps of fabric pulled over reed skeletons took to the sky without falling down. And when you attached a string, it would stay where you wanted it to stay.

After that discovery, the Wind dragons started painting the fabric with prayers. They fashioned thousands of kites in under a Moon, stringing them up and tying them to trees until the whole sky was filled with color.

It was then that their God returned. He was confused when he spotted thousands of colorful contraptions flying in his domain. Confused as he was, he saw the beauty and did not want to break them. He had to search for a place to land where his body would not get tangled in the ropes of the flying contraptions. He did not understand why his children had made them, for he had not realised what he had done wrong all of those years ago.

When all of his children flung themselves at him with great shrieks of joy, something clicked inside the God’s brain. His deep laughter boomed through the air and shook the kites on their strings. He reached down towards the hatchling that had designed them and breathed on the small drake.

He breathed with every single one of his children. At the end of the day there wasn’t a single dragon without wings of their own. The God smiled when he saw his children spiraling between the kites. He raised his slender neck and roared at the heavens, urging them all to follow for their first flight. And all was well.

The Wind children never stopped flying kites. For how can one better honor a God whom never lands, than with dozens of small and eversoaring shrines?
