Eye color plays a significant role in dragon society. So much so it is taboo to cover or hide your own gaze in most of their cultures. Interestingly there is yet to be a discovered genetic component to dragon eye color, a rigorously studied subject since dragons can be born with eye colors that drastically differ from their relatives and it is also clearly linked to a dragons elemental type. It appears that a dragons eye is affected by the environment the egg is kept in, similar to the way some reptile species gender is determined by temperature rather than genetic components – but more complicated.
There is a wide array of eye colors and types in Dragon Kind, however most elements can be sorted into four subcategories along with four more categories other rare but broadly found types across all the elements.
Earth Eyes
Brown or just ‘Earth’ is the most common type amoung earth dragons due to the abundance of the environment required to cultivate them- flat, dry temperate lands devoid of pretty much anything but clay and stone. Brown eyes are associated with wisdom, Indipendence and patience. Dragons with brown eyes seem to have the most ‘stubborn’ magic- needing to have a clear direct and forceful will in order to weild their element.
Fawn is by far the lightest amoung Earth Elemental colors. It is often mistaken for a light elemental color, earning it the nickname ‘false-light’. Fawn eyed dragons are typically born in deserts with high rolling dunes. They are associated with endurance, wealth, and talent. The magic of fawn eyed dragons is very powerful, and their weilders often need to release built up energy stores in some form throughout their lifetime or else risk overloading their systems.
Grey eyed dragons of Earth are born up high on mountains. Somtimes called ‘moon eyed’ for the silvery iris surrounded by a darker sclera giving them the appearance of a moon. They are associated with strength, bravery, and leadership. Grey eyed dragons deal better with ‘weight’ in magic than others, meaning they can harness and control larger sums of magic than most. The draw back to ‘High Weight’ spells however is that they are much slower and require more concentration.
Black eyed dragons are rarely seen in mixed societies and can be shocking to those unfamiliar with them. Somtimes mistaken for grey, black eyes are called ‘pit eyed’ in some regions. Earth dragons born in deep caves bare this color. Associated with mystery, distrusting, and somtimes fear due to some resemblance to the shade infestation. A black eyed dragons magic is very focused and can be devastating if the weilder is as accurate as their magic is, however it is hard as being slightly off can send bolts in random directions.
me when i started coming up with my lore: i’m not gonna have a bunch of subclans. that’s too much for me to remember so i’ll organize my lore into something that doesn’t need me to keep track of factions
me now: shit fuck damn i guess i gotta go track down the members of cult #976 so i can ground this new idea in something tangible
