Now that I’ve pinned down her design, here’s some long-overdue artwork of my clan mascot and favorite dragon, Merchant the fae! She is the result of a breeding project to create a Gold/Silver/Bronze dragon (hence my tumblr username being “That One Olympic Fae”).
As her name suggests, in my clan lore she is a salesdragon, the vendor who runs our shop and the face that finalizes trade deals with other clans. Clan Brayuh sells a little bit of everything, but but our main export is furs and textiles. It gets cold in the icefields! (Thanks to CPMTiger for being my brainstorm buddy and suggesting this tidbit!)
Basically how I rationalize ‘dead accounts’ in the lore.
Its a disease, called Silence and affects all dragons in a clan at abouuut the same time. It isn’t known what causes Silence only that it happens in waves of the gods creating new progenitors. New lairs pop up and many go Silent shortly after. Some old lairs might even spontaneously go Silent.
When a clan is Silenced all the dragons save for the progenitors (if any are still around) literally stop what they’re doing and lay down, entering a sort of twilight state where they aren’t dead, alive, asleep, or awake. The progenitors are somehow immune to Silence but they aren’t much better off. Progenitors are tied to their clans and lairs and can’t leave it to potentially go start another clan. Meaning the progenitors are trapped in the lair with a bunch of motionless (and for lack of a better description) corpses. This usually drives the progenitors mad after a time.
Silenced clans are not in and of themselves dangerous. In fact progenitors of Silenced clans are often painfully cheerful and welcoming, wanting dragons or beastclans to visit or stay because the silence of their lair is too much to bear. Its a type of happy madness that is unsettling to most normal dragons. Dragons of other clans either don’t stay as the progenitor asks or stay only briefly. Staying too long in a Silenced lair will result in becoming Silenced yourself.
There is no known cure for Silence. However, on some rare occasions a Silenced lair will become Unsilenced and resume right where it left off without any explanation. The progenitors of the formally Silenced clan are rarely the same though and might drive dragons away or in hysterics either submit to a deity and become an Exalted or try to ‘save’ their clan mates from becoming Silenced again and push them to become Exalted themselves. Very very few lairs fully recover from Silence.
